Planning
Identify the problem
What problem are you trying to solve? Make sure that you are both clear and concise. Your problem statement should be similar to a hypothesis.
Generate Ideas
Brainstorm, talk, sketch, pull from past ideas
- There are no bad ideas
- Think of all aspects related to the problem
Constraints
How is the problem limited for you?

Criteria
- How can you limit the problem?

Research
Chances are you are not quite an expert in the field.
- Seek advice from the "experts."
- What info could help you solve the problem? Be specific.
- Have a solution in mind? Be sure it does not already exist.
- Include each search term used and a summary related to your findings related to that term
- Be sure that someone reading your document can follow in your footsteps.
Possible solutions
Take an idea or a combination of ideas and explain them in more detail.
Including drawings is generally a good practice.
Including drawings is generally a good practice.
- Ideas turn into possible solutions
- Be proud of your possible solution
- Be prepared to defend your possible solution
Select the best idea
The “Idea Matrix” is simply a chart to help you choose a best solution based on objective information. On the left side, in blue, we list the criteria from the “Criteria” step. In the upper right, we list the solutions from the “Possibilities” step. Feel free to change the number of criteria and solutions to fit your needs. When completing a complex problem, try to have at least 7 criteria.
Select single criteria and rank the solutions in regards to the criteria. Do this for each criteria and add up your totals to see the results.
Example: Modes of Transportation (Based on my experiences)

Summary
Summarize your Conceptual model.

Graphical Model
Technical Sketch or Sketchup model
Technical Sketch is traditionally an orthographic projection using the top, front, and right side views. The technical sketch is made using more relaxed drafting techniques. Because of this, the Layout, Line type, and Line weight are super important.
SketchUp is a solid modeling software that can be used to create 3D models of your possible solution(s). 3D models show volume and can give the user an enhanced experience of your solution.
No matter how you make your Graphical Model, be sure to make it neat, clear, detailed and to an accurate scale with dimensions.
